A native of Kladno, Czech Republic, Tomáš was selected 71st overall in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft by the Montreal Canadiens. He has been with the Canadiens since the 2005-06 season and was named an alternate captain in 2012.
Internationally, Plekanec played for the Czech Republic at the 2000 World U18 Championship and has twice represented his country at the U20 World Junior Championships (2001/2002) winning a Gold Medal in 2001. He has also participated in nine World Hockey Championships, the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver and the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi where he captained the Czech Republic. Most recently, he was named captain of the Czech Republic team for the 2016 World Cup of Hockey in Toronto.
