A native of Toronto, Ontario, Taylor is a power forward who plays for the Erie Otters in the OHL. He was a top rated prospect for the 2016 NHL Entry Draft, and was selected by the Tampa Bay Lightning 58th overall in the 2nd round. During the 2016-17 season, Taylor finished second in league scoring, he registered careers highs with 42 goals, 67 assists, 109 points and a plus 67 rating. Taylor won the 2017 OHL Championship as a member of the Erie Otters, he was named to the OHL Third All-Star Team, and was also named to the Memorial Cup All-Star Team. Taylor was signed to an entry level contract by the Tampa Bay Lightning in May 2017.

Internationally, Taylor represented Canada at the 2017 IIHF World Junior Championship, winning a silver medal. During the tournament, he scored four goals in a round robin game, tying the Canadian record held by Mario Lemieux for most goals by a Canadian player in a single game at the World Junior Championship.
