A native of Kingston, Ontario, Taylor was selected 1st overall in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft by the Edmonton Oilers. A two-time Memorial Cup champion and MVP with the Windsor Spitfires, Hall began his NHL career during the 2010-11 season with the Oilers, and was traded to the New Jersey Devils prior to the 2016-17 season. During his seven seasons in Edmonton and New Jersey he led his team in scoring during the 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2016-17 seasons and has established himself among the NHL's elite players.

Internationally, Hall has represented Canada at the 2008 IIHF World U18 Championship, the 2010 IIHF U20 World Junior Championship, and multiple IIHF World Championships, winning gold in both 2015 and 2016.
