A native of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Patrick was originally selected in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft by the Philadelphia Flyers and was later traded to the Chicago Blackhawks during the 2005–06 season. As a Blackhawk, Sharp has won three Stanley Cup Championships and was Chicago's leading goal scorer (10 goals) in the 2013 playoffs. On July 10th 2015, Patrick was traded to the Dallas and spent two years with the Stars. Prior to the 2017-18 season he signed in Chicago as a free agent.

He is a two-time NHL All-Star who has played internationally for Canada in the 2008 World Championships and at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, where he was a member of the Gold Medal winning men's hockey team.
