A native of Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, Ben was regarded as a top defensemen during his four-year OHL career, which was highlighted by winning the 2014 OHL Championship with the Guelph Storm. Known for his shutdown ability as a defensive defenseman and his leadership qualities, he was drafted in the 4th round of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft by the Ottawa Senators.

In 2015-16, Ben made his professional debut splitting time between Ottawa and their AHL affiliate, the Binghamton Senators. He played his first NHL game on March 31st, 2016 and recorded his first NHL point on April 5th, 2016. In the 2018-19 season on December 1st, 2018, Ben scored his first ever National Hockey League goal against the San Jose Sharks.
